I Think Gambling Is Affecting Me: 5 Steps to Take Today

If you’re wondering whether gambling is affecting your life, the fact that you’re here says something. You don’t need to be sure. You don’t need a label. You just need to feel that something isn’t right.

Maybe you’ve been spending more than you planned. Maybe you’ve been hiding it from the people closest to you. Maybe you’ve noticed that gambling is taking up more of your time, your money, or your headspace than it used to. Whatever brought you here, you’re in the right place.

This page won’t ask you to make any big decisions. It offers five small steps you can take today, if and when you’re ready.

You're Not Alone

Millions of people across the UK experience the effects of gambling. Most don't talk about it. If you're starting to wonder whether gambling is affecting your life, you're not the first person to feel this way.

You don't need a label. You don't need to call it a problem, or an addiction, or anything at all. If something doesn't feel right, that's reason enough to be here.

This page offers five small, practical steps you can take today. You don't have to do all of them. Pick the one that feels most manageable and start there.

Step 1: Acknowledge What You're Feeling

You don't have to act on it yet. But naming it, even to yourself, matters. If gambling is taking up more of your time, money, or headspace than it used to, that's worth paying attention to. If you've been hiding it from the people around you, that tells you something too. You don't need to know what to do about it right now. Just let yourself sit with what you've noticed. That's the starting point.

Step 2: Set Up a Bank Gambling Block

This is one of the quickest protective steps you can take. Most major UK banks let you block gambling transactions through their app, for free, in a few minutes. It creates a barrier between you and gambling products, and most banks include a cooling-off period so the block can't be removed on impulse.

It's not a permanent solution on its own, but it's a practical first move that works straight away. There's something powerful about taking that step: you've made a decision to protect yourself, and that decision is now working for you in the background, even when you're not thinking about it. Visit our Bank Gambling Blocks guide for step-by-step instructions for your bank.

Step 3: Talk to Someone

This doesn't have to be a big conversation. It can be a text to a friend, a quiet word with a family member, or a call to a helpline. The point is to let one other person know what's going on, so you're not carrying it alone.

If you're not ready to talk to someone you know, the National Gambling Helpline is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day on 0808 8020 133. You can also use GamCare's live chat if you'd rather type than talk. Nobody will know you've been in touch unless you tell them.

Step 4: Register with GAMSTOP

GAMSTOP is a free service that blocks you from all online gambling sites licensed in the UK. You choose the length of the exclusion: 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years. Registration takes about five minutes.

It won't cover physical betting shops or sites not licensed in the UK, but it closes one of the biggest doors. Combined with a bank block, it gives you two layers of protection that are working for you even when willpower isn't.

Each tool you put in place is a decision you've made for yourself. That's not losing control. That's taking it back.

Step 5: Visit Chapter One

You're already here, so you've done this one. But it's worth knowing what else is available on our site. You can learn more about how gambling products affect the brain, read about the effects of gambling on mental health, or explore how and where to get help when you're ready to take the next step.

There's no pressure and no time limit. This information is here whenever you need it.

Where to Go from Here

You don't have to do anything else today. If you've done even one of the steps above, you've taken action. That matters.

When you're ready for more, our How to Stop Gambling: A Practical Guide goes deeper into the process, from telling someone you trust, to getting professional support through the NHS, to building a life beyond gambling. It's there for you whenever the time feels right.

Whatever stage you're at, it's not your fault. Gambling products are designed to keep people gambling, and the effects they cause don't reflect who you are. You deserve support, and it's available.
